What a wall opening is used for

A wall opening creates a new passage in an existing wall. Typical reasons are:

  • a new door or passage opening between two rooms
  • an open transition, for example between kitchen and living area
  • widening an existing doorway
  • conversion and renovation projects in apartments, houses and commercial buildings

Load-bearing or non-load-bearing wall?

Not every wall can simply be opened. What matters is whether it is load-bearing, meaning it carries loads from the floors or walls above.

For load-bearing walls, a structural assessment is generally required before a wall opening is made. That assessment is carried out by suitably qualified specialists, for example a structural engineer. Whether your wall is load-bearing and what that means for your plan is something we go through with you during the site visit or project discussion.

Permits and consent also depend on the individual case: the responsible building authority can tell you whether a permit or notification is needed. For owner-occupied flats or rented properties, check beforehand whether the owners’ association or the landlord has to agree. This is not legal advice.

Removing the whole wall instead of opening it?

If a wall is not just meant to get an opening but to be removed entirely, that falls under our demolition work. Just mention it – during the site visit we clarify which solution fits your project.

How a wall opening works with us

  1. Enquiry and project description

Briefly describe your plan – ideally with photos of the wall and approximate dimensions of the opening you want.

  2. Free site visit

We look at the situation on site and clarify the details, such as the wall construction, access and whether a structural assessment is an issue.

  3. Individual quote

After the site visit or a detailed discussion you receive your quote – at a fixed price or on an hourly basis, as agreed.

  4. Agree a date

Once you have placed the order, we agree the start of the work with you.

  5. Carrying out the work

We carry out the wall opening in a controlled and clean way, as discussed. If something unexpected turns up, such as cables or hidden components, we decide how to proceed with you directly on site.

  6. Clean finish

Afterwards we clean the work area and take care of the construction waste disposal as agreed.

What the quote and cost depend on

We can’t responsibly give a flat price for a wall opening – it depends on the individual case. Typical factors are:

  • whether the wall is load-bearing and whether a structural assessment is needed
  • size and position of the opening
  • material and thickness of the wall
  • access to the site and the effort for cleaning up
  • amount of construction waste and its removal

What exactly is included in the job is set out in the quote. You receive it after the free site visit – at a fixed price or on an hourly basis, as agreed.

Where we work

AS ABBRUCH is based in Pforzheim and works across Baden-Württemberg – including the Enzkreis, Karlsruhe and surroundings, the Calw district and the Stuttgart region.

Common questions about wall openings

Does a structural engineer have to be involved before a wall opening?

For load-bearing walls, a structural assessment is generally required before a wall opening is made. Whether that applies to your plan is something we clarify with you during the site visit or project discussion.

Is there a lot of noise and dust?

Demolition and wall opening work always involves some noise and dust. We work in a controlled and clean way and, where possible, agree the schedule with you.

How long does a wall opening take?

The duration depends on the type and scope of the work. After the site visit or project discussion we give you a realistic timeframe.

What information do you need for a quote?

Send us a short description of your plan, ideally with photos of the wall and approximate dimensions. That lets us assess your project faster and more accurately.
